The People Behind the Numbers
August was a big month at Giving the Basics, and it wouldn’t have happened without our incredible volunteers.
21 groups came in with 328 volunteers – giving 522 hours of their time this month, helping us process an incredible 270,583 hygiene products. Every hour spent sorting, organizing, packing and preparing products helps us get essential hygiene items into the hands of people who need them.
These numbers represent more than products and volunteer hours. They represent people showing up for their neighbors and choosing to make a difference.
This month, we’re excited to recognize a few of the groups who made an especially meaningful impact through our August Volunteer Awards.
Volunteer Engagement Award — Lockton
Lockton brought their team to Giving the Basics for 2 volunteer shifts, with 49 volunteers participating.
Their continued involvement is a great example of how consistent volunteer engagement can make a lasting impact. Each shift helps keep our warehouse moving and ensures more hygiene products are ready to reach our nonprofit partners and the people they serve.

Volunteer MVP — Sacred Heart Staff
The Sacred Heart Staff team made a tremendous impact, helping process 65,522 hygiene products during their volunteer experience.
That’s 65,522 products sorted, organized and prepared to make their way into communities where they are needed. Their time and effort helped move thousands of essential items one step closer to someone who may be facing the difficult choice between purchasing hygiene products and paying for other necessities.
We’re grateful for the energy and heart this group brought to their time at Giving the Basics.
Impact Story Award — Kiewit
Sometimes, the impact of volunteering is found in the perspective it gives us.
One Kiewit volunteer shared:
“This experience showed me a completely different perspective of poverty. When you think about poverty in general I think of people struggling to find their next meal or clothes, shoes, etc. Thinking about those who have to struggle because of basic hygiene is heartbreaking. I was so grateful to be able to be a part of stopping that situation. Everyone deserves to feel clean, happy, healthy and true to themselves. This company does an amazing job to give a small piece of humanity back.”
Another shared:
“I know I will appreciate my next shower and be thankful for the privilege of it. It won’t be taken for granted!”
That is exactly why volunteer experiences matter. What might look like a few hours in our warehouse can offer a new perspective—and, more importantly, can help provide someone with something as basic and essential as soap, shampoo, deodorant or toothpaste.
