Join the 2026 Spring Showers Corporate Hygiene Challenge

Spring Showers Drive 2026Every spring, corporate and community partners have the opportunity to turn corporate responsibility into real, local impact. The Spring Showers Corporate Hygiene Challenge brings businesses, organizations, and teams together around a simple but essential goal: making sure students have access to the basic hygiene products they need to succeed in school.

This year, Giving the Basics invites you to join this challenge—an easy, meaningful way to create real impact for local schools while engaging your team in friendly competition.

Why It Matters

Access to basic hygiene products isn’t just about cleanliness—it’s about confidence, classroom focus, and dignity.

Too many students face hygiene poverty, going without essentials like deodorant, shampoo, or toothpaste. When those needs aren’t met, it can affect everything from mental health to school attendance and academic success. Because of last year’s Spring Showers participants, thousands of students were able to show up to school feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to learn.

Looking Back at Spring Showers 2025

Last April, hundreds of generous individuals and 25 businesses and organizations came together for our first-ever Spring Showers for Dignity Drive. With KMBC 9 Cares for Kids amplifying our efforts, an incredible 270,175 essential hygiene items were donated to students across Kansas City. Through a combination of online giving and team-led donation efforts, participants helped meet a critical need in local schools—restoring confidence, focus, and dignity for thousands of students.

How Corporate Partners Power Dignity in Kansas City

November 15, 2025 – National Philanthropy Day

Today, we celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD)—a moment to honor the quiet, everyday acts of generosity that transform lives and strengthen communities. Founded in the 1980s by philanthropist Douglas Freeman and officially recognized in 1986 with a presidential proclamation from Ronald Reagan, NPD is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a call to reflect on the meaning of giving and to thank the individuals, nonprofits, and businesses who turn compassion into action.

At Giving the Basics, we see this impact every day—especially through our corporate partners, who don’t just write checks. They show up, roll up their sleeves, and build dignity, one hygiene item at a time.

The Impact of Corporate Partners

https://afpglobal.org/NPDLove

Every day, businesses across Kansas City and beyond choose to stand with us to ensure that no child, senior, or family goes without hygiene essentials.

This year, corporate teams have:

  • 🌟 Volunteered in our warehouse and in the community
  • 🌟 Hosted product drives that filled shelves and hearts
  • 🌟 Joined our annual Spring Showers campaign
  • 🌟 Supported Hygiene for the Holidays
  • 🌟 Sponsored our events and programs
  • 🌟 Donated essential funding to scale our mission

Together, these efforts have transformed lives by restoring dignity, confidence, and health — the basics we all need to thrive.

Whether it’s packing hygiene items or matching gifts, we’re proud to help families face the holidays with confidence and care.” — Kristi Macaluso, KBP Brands

Hygiene for the Holidays

Hygiene For the Holidays Event

Bringing Hope, Dignity, and the Next Step Forward This Holiday Season

Over the past several years, thousands of families in Kansas City have gained access to soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other essentials through our work at Giving the Basics. Children have walked into classrooms with confidence. Job-seekers have been able to attend interviews without shame. Seniors stepped into community life with dignity.

Yet hygiene poverty has not gone away. Nationally, one in four students still struggles to afford basic hygiene products. And locally—right in our own backyard—many families remain caught in painful choices between groceries and deodorant, rent and diapers.

This reality points to a simple truth: no child should miss class for lack of soap. No parent should have to risk losing work because of hygiene needs. Because dignity is not a luxury — it is a basic right.

That’s never more true than at the holidays—a time of year full of family gatherings and challenging reminders for people struggling to provide for their own basic needs. And that’s why we’re currently in the second year of our annual holiday campaign: Hygiene for the Holidays.

Hygiene for the Holidays

Our campaign is built around the Hygiene for the Holidays Catalog — a simple-yet-powerful way to provide dignity through essential hygiene items. The catalog allows donors to “shop” for supplies like soap, toothpaste, diapers, and laundry detergent, knowing that every purchase goes directly toward families who need them most.

The benefits are clear:

  • Easy to use—the catalog offers a range of meaningful gift options to suit your giving preferences.
  • Meets real needs—people receive tangible support through hygiene products that bring dignity back into daily life.
  • Trusted distribution—products are delivered through schools, shelters, and other community partners already working alongside those in need.
  • Local impact—gifts directly strengthen families in Kansas City, with ripple effects across the community.

Hygiene for the Holidays is generosity made tangible: an easy way to give that meets families where they are.

A Word of Encouragement

From Teresa Hamilton, Founder and CEO of Giving the Basics:

Last year, so many families felt the impact of your kindness through our Hygiene for the Holidays initiative. Your gifts brought dignity, confidence, and hope to people right here in Kansas City—and that’s something to celebrate.

This season, we’re asking you to join us again! When you give through our Hygiene for the Holidays Catalog, your impact is immediate and you’re helping families find comfort and confidence during a time that can be really tough. Together, we can make sure everyone ends the year feeling cared for and stronger.

How It Works

The only way this campaign will succeed is through the support of people like you. If you’d like to join us, here’s how:

  1. Browse the Catalog—Select from a variety of holiday hygiene packages, or choose to give a custom gift of any amount.
  2. Make a Donation—Every gift provides hygiene products directly to families in need.
  3. Share the Impact—Join the movement by inviting others to give dignity this holiday season.

Each step turns generosity into real items—soap, toothpaste, diapers, and more—delivered through trusted schools and community partners. Families receive exactly what they need to feel clean, confident, and cared for.

Opportunities for Corporate Partners

If your organization would like to participate in Hygiene for the Holidays, you can help the campaign succeed in major ways. Corporate partners can:

  • Offer a matching gift to multiply impact and encourage others to give—84% of donors say they’re more likely to give when a matching gift is offered.
  • Host an employee fundraiser or hygiene drive that builds team spirit and supports families in need.
  • Make an in-kind donation of surplus products.

When businesses step in, the effect is two-fold: families in Kansas City receive vital hygiene products, and employees experience the pride of working for a company that cares for the community. It’s an opportunity for organizations to do good, strengthen teams, and share the gift of dignity this holiday season. Reach out today to learn more.

Closing the Gap Together

Hygiene poverty continues to hold families back. Yet the solution is simple: when the basics are provided, dignity and hope follow.

The impact made so far is worth celebrating. Every gift, every kit, every bottle of soap has mattered. Because of the generosity of so many individuals and organizations, thousands of families have experienced the relief of having what they need.

But the work isn’t finished. This holiday season, the Hygiene for the Holidays Catalog offers a way to meet real needs with tangible gifts that change lives.

Together, we can ensure Kansas City families end the year with dignity, confidence, and hope.

Children’s Health Day: Healthy Kids, Happy Boxes

Every first Monday in October, we celebrate Children’s Health Day, a time to spotlight what every child deserves: a healthy start and a hopeful future. While much of the conversation centers around medical care, nutrition, and mental wellness, there’s a foundational element we often overlook—access to basic hygiene. At Giving the Basics, we believe that good health starts with dignity, and dignity begins with the simple act of feeling clean.

Why This Matters

Imagine starting your school day without deodorant, without toothpaste, or without clean clothes. It’s a reality many kids face—not because they don’t care, but because hygiene products are simply out of reach. This is known as hygiene poverty, and it’s a growing issue in our communities. Unlike food or medicine, hygiene items aren’t covered by government assistance programs like SNAP or WIC. As a result, countless families are forced to go without soap, shampoo, feminine products, or even diapers.

The impact runs deeper than just physical discomfort. Students experiencing hygiene poverty often struggle with attendance, bullying, and self-worth. In fact, studies show that 42% of students affected by hygiene poverty have missed school, simply because they didn’t feel clean enough to attend. When kids can’t show up confidently, their ability to learn, grow, and thrive is compromised.

Giving the Basics: A Hygiene Charity Making a Difference

Founded with the mission of restoring dignity through hygiene, Giving the Basics works every day to bridge this critical gap. By partnering with schools, food pantries, shelters, and outreach programs, we provide free hygiene orders for schools and families in need. These orders are thoughtfully assembled with essential items like soap, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine care, and more—items that can transform a child’s day and outlook.

Currently, Giving the Basics serves over 400 schools and agencies across Kansas and Missouri, reaching thousands of students each year. Oue simple, practical model empowers local organizations to stock products where kids can access them quietly—nurse’s offices, school pantries, or guidance centers. It’s an approach rooted in dignity, trust, and community cares.

How Schools Can Join the Mission

Schools are often the first to notice when a child is struggling. Teachers and counselors witness the effects of hygiene poverty firsthand. That’s why Giving the Basics invites schools and nonprofit organizations to apply for free hygiene orders through our program. Registration is quick, and approved schools receive orders on a recurring basis.

Once orders arrive, schools distribute them discreetly to students who need them—often with no questions asked. This approach ensures that kids can focus on learning without the distraction or embarrassment of unmet basic needs. It also fosters a school environment built on compassion and equity.

Celebrate Children’s Health Day in Your Community

Children’s Health Day is the perfect moment to take action—both at home and in your community. Families can mark the day by scheduling wellness checkups, talking with kids about healthy routines, or assembling hygiene orders together to donate.

Community groups can host events that promote hygiene education, provide free health screenings, or organize donation drives for hygiene items.

These small efforts, when multiplied across neighborhoods and schools, can create lasting change. By raising awareness of hygiene poverty and the simple steps we can take to fight it, we build a healthier, more compassionate future for every child.

Why Your Time as a Volunteer Matters

At Giving the Basics, volunteers are the heartbeat of the mission. Every donated hour helps sort hygiene products, assemble orders, and get supplies into the hands of families who need them most. Whether you’re an individual, part of a family, or looking for a team-building opportunity with coworkers, there’s a place for you to serve.

Volunteers don’t just touch hygiene items—they touch lives. They help restore confidence to a student, ease the burden on a struggling parent, and bring smiles to children who simply want to feel like their peers. It’s a hands-on way to make a real difference, one product at a time.

Volunteer with Giving the Basics

This Children’s Health Day, let’s do more than celebrate—let’s step in. Join Giving the Basics in the fight against hygiene poverty by volunteering your time. Weekly shifts are available, along with community volunteer nights and family-friendly opportunities.

Together, we can ensure that every child has access to the basic tools of health, dignity, and happiness. Because healthy kids make happy communities—and it all starts with something as simple as a clean start.

Corporate Volunteering: Team Building Fun

Corporate Volunteering: Team Building Fun

Newmark Zimmer Volunteers

At Giving the Basics, we know that strong communities are built when people come together to serve. That’s why corporate volunteering has become such an important part of our mission. When employees volunteer with us, they’re not just giving back through community service—they’re also building stronger, more connected teams.

Why Corporate Volunteering Matters

Corporate volunteer opportunities give employees the chance to step outside their normal routines and connect with each other in new ways. Packing hygiene products, organizing shelves, or preparing boxes for schools may seem simple, but the teamwork, laughter, and problem-solving that happen in the process are powerful.

Volunteering as a team helps companies:

  • Build trust and collaboration – Serving side by side encourages stronger workplace relationships. Newmark Zimmer (Kansas City)
  • Boost employee morale – Giving back through community service creates pride and fulfillment.
  • Develop leadership skills – Corporate volunteering puts employees in new roles where they can grow.
  • Strengthen company culture – Showing a commitment to the community builds loyalty inside and outside the office.

August Volunteer Impact

This August, we welcomed 21 incredible corporate groups into our warehouse in Kansas City, many of them volunteering more than once! Together, more than 300 volunteers packed 303,889 hygiene items that directly support students, families, and individuals in need.

The passion and heart our volunteers bring is felt in every product packed. Here’s what a few of them shared:

“As a former school nurse, I have seen the impact of providing these basics to students and families. It truly makes a difference and is so needed. In addition to being an opportunity for the student to connect with a trusted adult.” – The University of Kansas Health System

“My mom used to tell me stories of how she was bullied as a kid because her family was too poor to shower. Volunteering here really put into perspective what she went through. I am so glad to support an organization that provides this in KC!” – The University of Kansas Health System

“It is heartbreaking to know that every one of the hundreds of tubes of toothpaste that I touched today will go to someone who otherwise wouldn’t have any. Thank you for being here to do this and allowing us to help.” – The University of Kansas Health System

Corporate Donations Multiply the Impact

When companies combine corporate donations with volunteer hours, the impact is even greater. Financial support provides thousands of hygiene essentials—like soap, deodorant, shampoo, and toothpaste—while volunteer time helps us prepare and distribute them to schools, shelters, and families in need.

Newmark Zimmer

Newmark Zimmer volunteers celebrating how much they have collected so far

One shining example is Newmark Zimmer. Not only has their team volunteered with us more than four times this year, but they also rallied their friends and colleagues to raise over $30,000 for essential hygiene items. This incredible generosity means tens of thousands of products went directly into the hands of students, families, and individuals who would otherwise go without.

Stories like theirs remind us that corporate giving isn’t just about writing a check or showing up once—it’s about creating a ripple effect of care and dignity that transforms entire communities.

Together, corporate volunteers and donations ensure dignity is restored to those experiencing hygiene poverty in our community.

More Than Team Building—It’s Community Building

One of the best parts of hosting volunteer groups is watching teams leave energized and inspired. Employees don’t just return to the office with stronger bonds; they also carry a renewed sense of purpose, knowing they’ve helped meet a critical need through meaningful community service.

Charity Day: How You Can Make an Impact Too

International Charity Day

There’s something powerful about knowing your small act of kindness can create a ripple effect. Whether it’s donating a bar of soap, showing up to volunteer, or organizing a drive at work, these moments of giving add up to real change. In a world that often feels divided or overwhelming, charity reminds us that we’re still connected—that we still have the power to help someone else. That’s why days like the International Day of Charity matter. They remind us not only to care, but to act.

Every year on September 5, the world observes the International Day of Charity, a global call to action inspired by the life and legacy of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This day was established by the United Nations in 2012 to raise awareness and encourage charitable work across the globe. The date honors Mother Teresa’s passing and her lifelong mission to serve the poorest of the poor with compassion and dignity. Her legacy is a reminder that even small acts of charity—whether through time, resources, or care—can leave a lasting impact.

Learn more at the official International Day of Charity website.

The United Nations created this observance to mobilize individuals and organizations around the world to help others through volunteering and philanthropy. The goal is simple: promote solidarity, strengthen communities, and empower people through acts of giving. You can learn more about the meaning behind this global movement at the UN site.

The UN chose this date not only to honor Mother Teresa, but to highlight the crucial role that charity organizations and individuals play in tackling global challenges—like hunger, education, and health. It’s a reminder that generosity doesn’t require wealth or status. It begins with the choice to care—and then to take action. Whether you’re donating goods, volunteering your time, or encouraging others to get involved, you become part of a global movement of people lifting each other up in meaningful, lasting ways.

That kind of impact doesn’t have to start on the other side of the world—it can start right here at home. At Giving the Basics, we make it easy for anyone to get involved in a hands-on, meaningful way. You can volunteer to pack and sort hygiene items at our warehouse, organize a Dignity Drive at your workplace or school, or bring a group to serve together. Whether you’re an individual looking to give back, a family wanting to serve together, or a company building a culture of compassion, there’s a place for you here. Every hour you serve and every item you help collect ensures someone in our community has access to the dignity of basic hygiene. That’s how you can make an impact—right here, right now.

Visit givingthebasics.org to explore how you can volunteer or support our mission. Whether you come once, bring a team, or join us regularly, you’ll be making a real difference. Let’s honor the spirit of this global day with local action. Because when you give the basics, you give dignity—and that’s how you can make an impact.

July Community Groups: Hygiene Heroes

Top 4 Ways to Get Involved in Community Service Through Giving the Basics

In July, our community showed up in a big way. From church groups to scout troops to neighborhood friends, we saw what happens when people care deeply—and act boldly—to fight Hygiene Poverty. These volunteer teams became true Hygiene Heroes by giving their time, energy, and compassion to help Kansas City families live with dignity.

Here are the Top 4 Ways You Can Join the Movement:

  1. Volunteer Onsite

Whether it was sorting soap, assembling orders, or stacking shelves, community groups got their hands (and hearts) into the work. Volunteering together made a lasting impact—and brought plenty of smiles along the way.

National Nonprofit Day: Our Hygiene Mission

National Nonprofit Day: Our Hygiene Mission

On August 17, National Nonprofit Day honors the impactful work of nonprofit organizations across the country. As a proud nonprofit rooted in dignity and compassion, Giving the Basics is taking this moment to reflect on our own journey—and how a simple idea grew into a powerful hygiene charity that now reaches millions of lives.

Giving the Basics began in the Midwest in 2009 when a young single mother, using a government assistance card, was forced to remove soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, laundry detergent—and even toilet paper—from her grocery cart because these items weren’t covered. Embarrassed and confused, she left the store knowing her family would likely go without. When our founder heard her story, she thought, “There are others. There are more.” That moment sparked a ripple effect. After officially launching in 2011, Giving the Basics partnered with schools, pantries, police departments, and senior centers—growing into America’s hygiene hub. Today, through the procurement, fulfillment, and distribution of essential hygiene products, we regularly serve over 3 million people across more than 2,000 locations—providing human dignity one bar of soap, toothbrush, or stick of deodorant at a time.

From our earliest days, we’ve grown into a trusted nonprofit partner for schools, shelters, food pantries, and more. Thanks to our growing network of supporters and passionate volunteers, we’ve distributed millions of hygiene products across the nation. We’re more than a hygiene hub—we’re a movement for human dignity.

This National Nonprofit Day, we celebrate the community that has made it all possible. You—our donors, our volunteers, our advocates—are the reason we’re able to keep expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

If you’re looking for a way to give back that’s simple but significant, volunteer with us. Share our story. Support a school. Or just follow along as we continue our mission. There’s always room for one more person in this movement.
